Reduce Fire Fuels

Guidance for creating defensible space on your property

Fuel-reduction treatments remove or decrease vegetation so that they burn less severely and are easier to suppress in a wildfire.

The process may include thinning dense areas of vegetation, limbing up mature trees, or reducing dead standing or downed fuel. Done correctly, hazardous fuel reduction can:

  • Reduce damage from a catastrophic wildfire

  • Improve forest health

  • Maintain native biodiversity

  • Improve safety outcomes for residents and emergency-response personnel
