Prescribed Fire

Learn about the uses of prescribed fire and required permits in Mendocino County

What is prescribed burning?

Prescribed burning, a type of beneficial burning, is the intentional application of fire for specific purposes, under predetermined conditions, with personnel and equipment pre-staged to monitor and control the event. Prescribed burning can increase wildfire resilience, improve ecosystem health, and achieve other land management objectives.

How do prescribed burns help mitigate wildfire damage?

Wildfires are part of our ecosystems, and a reality of living in California. Prescribed burning can reduce wildfire intensity by decreasing available fuel loads, which slows the spread of fire and helps lessen potential damage to structures. When used in conjunction with thinning and other vegetation management, prescribed fire has been proven to help control and/or mitigate the extreme effects of wildfire.
